🌸 Spring

Spring — April to June  |  Second Best Season

Wildlife

Mid-April to early June is a wonderful time to visit Dolpa. The weather begins to warm, lower valleys burst with rhododendrons and wildflowers, and the days grow longer. Wildlife is particularly active — this is an excellent season to spot Himalayan blue sheep, musk deer, and migratory birds around Shey Phoksundo National Park.

Early March can still be problematic — high passes may be blocked by snow and technical gear is needed. By mid-April the passes open and trails become manageable even for non-technical trekkers. Temperatures during the day reach a comfortable 10–15°C, dropping to around -10°C over high passes at night.

Mid-April to May is the sweet spot for spring: passes are open, wildflowers are blooming, and you can absorb the full beauty of Dolpa without fighting snow or ice.
💡
Spring Tip Allow 2–3 buffer days in Nepalgunj for your Juphal flight — spring weather is generally stable, but morning fog can occasionally delay or cancel flights to Dolpa’s small mountain airport.

🌧 Monsoon

Flights

Here is one of Dolpa’s most surprising secrets: while the rest of Nepal drowns in monsoon rain, Dolpa stays mostly dry. The region sits in the trans-Himalayan rain shadow behind the massive Dhaulagiri and Kanjiroba ranges, which block the heavy monsoon clouds from reaching the high valleys. Trekking is possible — and the landscape turns an extraordinary lush green that you won’t see at any other time of year.

The lower trails below 3,000m can be muddy and slippery, with occasional leeches. The real challenge is practical: flights to Juphal are frequently delayed or cancelled due to monsoon weather in Nepalgunj and the Terai. Plan for 3–4 buffer days minimum on each end. Temperatures are actually quite pleasant — around -4°C to 17°C depending on altitude.

The monsoon is Dolpa’s secret season — greener valleys, fewer crowds, and the magical experience of trekking in a high-altitude desert during the rains. Just be flexible with your flights.

🍂 Autumn

Autumn delivers Dolpa at its most dramatic — clear skies, golden valleys, and perfect trekking conditions

Culture

September and October are the absolute best months to visit Dolpa. The monsoon clouds clear, leaving behind crystal-clear skies with extraordinary mountain visibility. The air is clean and crisp, trails are dry and safe, and passes are fully open. Daytime temperatures are perfect for trekking — around 10–20°C at lower elevations, dropping to -3°C to -11°C over the high passes at night.

Autumn also brings the harvest season to Dolpa’s villages — a particularly wonderful time to experience local culture. Communities are active, festivals occur, and the golden barley fields against the backdrop of grey cliffs and blue sky create scenes of extraordinary beauty. This is also peak photography season.

September and October are the undisputed sweet spot for visiting Dolpa — clear skies, open passes, perfect temperatures, and villages alive with the harvest season.
⚠️
Don’t Leave It Too Late By November, early snow begins to close higher passes and temperatures drop sharply. Mid-October is the latest safe window for high passes. If you’re only visiting Dunai, Phoksundo Lake, and lower Dolpa, November is still enjoyable.

❄️ Winter

Trekking

Winter in Dolpa is not recommended for most travellers. Heavy snowfall blocks all the high mountain passes from mid-November through mid-March. Most teahouses and lodges in Upper Dolpa close entirely. Temperatures at altitude plummet to -14°C and below. Even Dunai itself, at 2,140m, experiences significant cold and limited services.

That said, some determined travellers have completed winter visits to Phoksundo Lake with an experienced guide and full winter camping equipment. The frozen lake in a silent, snow-covered landscape is undeniably spectacular — but it requires specialist preparation and an experienced team. We do not recommend this for first-time visitors.
